Rio gets the gold for mercury-free Olympic medals
On June 14th, the Rio Olympic Organizing Committee announced the design of the Olympic medals for the Olympic Games.
The medals were designed to show the relationship between the strengths of Olympic heroes and the forces of nature. The forces of nature are not only in the design of the medals, but influence how the medals are produced, which is different than medals in previous Olympic games.
The new silver and bronze medals were produced using 30% recycled materials.
The gold used for the gold medals was extracted without the use of mercury (please refer to 'Mercury pollution in artisanal and small scale gold mining') according to global requirements for mercury-free future.
We wish for the success of the Rio Olympic Games and will celebrate the athletes who get to hang the mercury-free medals around their necks.
